Deadlines, meetings, emails and unfinished tasks can make it feel like work never truly stops. When busy periods become the norm rather than the exception, it can become increasingly difficult to switch off and recharge.

Here are a few practical ways to protect yourself from burnout.

1. Decide What Actually Needs to Be Done Today

Not every task is equally urgent. At the beginning of your day, identify two or three priorities that genuinely need your attention. Everything else can be scheduled around them.

This helps prevent a long to-do list from making every task feel like an emergency.

2. Take Short Breaks During the Day

Working continuously doesn’t necessarily mean getting more done. Give yourself short breaks to walk around, stretch, get a drink or simply step away from your screen.

Even a few minutes away from work can help you return with better focus.

3. Create a Clear End to Your Workday

When possible, establish a time when work ends. Avoid repeatedly checking emails and messages after hours unless your job genuinely requires it.

Having a clear separation between work and personal time gives your mind an opportunity to recover.

4. Don’t Neglect Life Outside Work

Exercise, hobbies, social activities and quality time with family or friends shouldn’t always be sacrificed because work is busy.

Having something meaningful to look forward to outside the office can make demanding periods easier to manage.

5. Recognise When Your Workload Is Unsustainable

Sometimes better time management isn’t enough. If you’re consistently overwhelmed despite prioritising and setting boundaries, the workload itself may need to change.

Consider discussing priorities, deadlines or responsibilities with your manager rather than simply trying to work longer hours.

Work Is Important, but Recovery Is Too

Avoiding burnout isn’t about becoming less ambitious. It’s about creating a way of working that you can sustain over the long term.

When work never seems to slow down, don’t wait for the perfect quiet week to take care of yourself. Small changes to how you work and recover can make a meaningful difference.
